Jonathan Wells is the Creative director of Flux a global creative community celebrating film, art, music, design and culture in Los Angeles, and partner of the Protoclip Festival since 2007. He is also the founder and for 10 years served as the Festival Director of the acclaimed global touring film festival « RESFEST ». As a specialist in every kind of vidéoclip, M. Wells reveals us the new trends of the year…
Tell us more about the « Flux Festival » you organise in Los Angeles since 2008 ?
The Flux Screening Series at the Hammer Museum is a quarterly program we have designed to be like a festival in one evening. We curate a screening of new music videos and short films, presentations by guest filmmakers and an after-party with guest DJs or live bands. Special guests have included Michel Gondry, Martin de Thurah, Chris Milk, James Frost, Logan, Encyclopedia Pictura, Andreas Nilsson and OK Go, to name a few. What makes it especially unique are the often hilarious filmmaker presentations. We've had surprise live music performances, filmmakers who have taught the audience dance moves and exclusive short films made just for the night.
What is the place for the créative film making in USA ?
Los Angeles and New York are the traditional hubs for film production, but technology has allowed filmmakers all over the USA to make films and not be forced to move to the major cities. I like to use MK12 as an example. They have happily kept their base in Kansas City, MO. (They did the last James Bond title sequence, who would have guessed?)
According to you, what are the new trends on vidéo music this year ?
It has been a big year for music video. For the first time in years, music videos were actually part of pop culture discourse. From Romain Gavras' MIA "Born Free" to Jonas Akerlund's "Telephone" video for Lady Gaga, we saw the return of the big event video that has often used controversy to get people talking.
Because of the power of the Internet, I believe more people are making and watching music videos than MTV in its heyday.
Another exciting trend has been the use of interactivity and new forms of audience participation in musicvideo. Chris Milk's interactive Arcade Fire project, "The Wilderness Downtown," is definitely a highlight of the year.
The Protoclip Festival decides to honor Scandinavia (Norway, Sueden, Danemark, Island, Finland) for the next session. How could you describe the North Art Culture ?
I first became a fan of Scandinavian art/culture in the mid-90's when I saw Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier's stylish pre-Dogme 95 feature Zentropa, got turned on to Icelandic music/art/film collective GusGus and was introduced to the Jukka Brothers on MTV an early creation of the crazy Swedes known as Traktor.
I've had the pleasure of visiting Sweden and Finland a few times and I'm a big fan of the food and design I experienced. Of course there is great new music too.
In addition with the wealth and darkness into the scandinavian cinéma (dark comedy, thriller), the northern vidéoclip surprise us by his boldness, his realism and imaginery. Can we talk about « Clips de genre » ?
Scandinavian shorts and music videos often feature very polished, crisp, cinematic production, combined with strong imagery, uncanny darkness and peculiar comedy. Much attention is paid to how colors tonally create a sense of cohesion and lend realism to very unrealistic, sometimes uncomfortable, happenings. The films have the appearance of vivid dreams (or nightmares), and watching them feels like you're experiencing the directors' subconsciousness. It's interesting that this is almost the opposite of Dogme 95, which focuses on a completely stripped-down realism.
Do you think The Protoclip Festival can become a global touring évent ?
Speaking from experience, organizing a global tour is a big undertaking, but I'm sure music video fans around the world would celebrate. It's an amazing pleasure to see music videos on a movie screen with your friends as opposed to a small window on your computer by yourself.
That said, Protoclip should certainly further develop the website to become a year-round destination for music video. This would help build community and excitement before the annual event in Paris.
