Stephane Berla, meeting with a talent director. Winner of the 2009 Gold Clip
Talented film director, from advertising and music videos, he directed "Tais-toi mon coeur" with the group Dionysos, "Est ce que c’est ça ?" the last music video of Matthieu Chedid, these particularly creative films have earned many awards including the Award of the International Festival "Gold video music" in 2009. Dionysos and M are rock bands that have developed crazy surreal universe. What is your relationship with this music?
These are artists who build, the universe shifted to address certain issues in a metaphorical way. I find myself completely in this approach. The reality in art do not interest me more than that, at least not so front and I love artists who take risks by taking parallel tracks but still very playful. That's what I admire most about them, this ability to be both sophisticated and popular. Adapt their songs is a real joy because they allow me to go far enough in the imaginary field in which I am most comfortable. I am unable to process a realistic subject. These are artists who build, the universe shifted to address certain issues in a metaphorical way. I find myself completely in this process.
You often use the theme of love. What is the role of heart in your videos ?
I never paid attention to that, they are probably the songs that brought me to this field. Anyway, if I have to make a statement, the love stories in my clips are often quite tragic. However, it has been 12 years since I saw the great love. Perhaps a form of catharsis.
Why book you always end tragically funny to your characters?
So I must say in my defense than I've realized only recently and is therefore completely unconscious (not sure if this is more reassuring). I hope that the killers of fictional characters will never come to trial because then I would find myself in a very bad position.
Eliminating my characters I can maybe deal with some existential questions that have always interested, especially the complex relationship between creator and creature. The second reason is a little childish, I like the idea of tackling difficult subjects see how subversive shifted to prime time.
Anecdotally, when I met the marketing director of Barclays who wanted to offer me a writing-for-M project, he asked me for a project light and playful. You are currently working on the big screen adaptation of " La Mécanique du coeur " with Luc Besson. Tell us.
With both clips for Dionysos, I had a privileged relationship with Mathias. If Snow was an opportunity to get closer and we find artistic atoms hooked, " Tais-toi mon cœur " was confirmation that we wanted to extend the adventure beyond the clip. While we fantasizing about the idea of adapting his book "La Mécanique du cœur" a feature film. Mathias met Luc Besson on promotion of the disc on the tray Journal "that offered him an appointment in the wake you. Everything went fairly quickly then chained, Mathias me back to offer co-produced with his animated film "La Mécanique du cœur” produced by Europa Corp., released in 3D relief in 2012. The film moves away from the clip but will retain a dark and poetic beauty.
All your films seem to go back to anti-conformism and daring ... Do you feel to be part of a new generation of filmmakers? Examples (Michel Gondry, JP Jeunet)
I'm clearly not pretend to compare myself to these two filmmakers I admire enormously. I have a particular fondness for Michel Gondry has always viewed the clip as a testing ground and was among the first filmmakers to show a clip could (should) be an art film. I admire him even more than he managed to bring his films in the main ingredients of a work of art that I find perfectly balanced: his films are both deeply intelligent, aesthetic and emotional. A good movie usually met two of these qualities, but all three are much rarer.
I may share with him and a whole generation of young filmmakers want to divert or combine different techniques to open new paths.
What do you think is the future of the clip in France?
The record industry is in a very difficult situation and the budgets allocated to the promotion of artists lose weight day by day. Suddenly we find ourselves in a completely paradoxical situation where the artists have never been in greater need of images without the record companies can offer. Lack of money, unfortunately bringing the fear of risk taking, creativity French professional videos is disappointing lately.
Fortunately, we have a real culture of France and Protoclip clip is the perfect representation. It is extremely motivating and reassuring to know that such festival exists in France, where every year there are gems unearthed by the team. I do not know how the French clip will evolve, but I observe that in any case the alternative media and fans are most active.
What do you think of entertainment in the Nordic countries?
Difficult to generalize, but I am a big fan of Sigur Ros clips, Bjork, Royksopp, clips made by Martin Thurah or filmmaker Tomas Alfredson has made the disturbing Morse. These works have in common a sense of beauty and mystery that touches me particularly.
